Water metering in Australia is set to take a significant step forward, with smart metering leaders, PLUS ES announcing a partnership with global technology company Sagemcom to expand its smart metering capabilities into the water sector.
The agreement will see Sagemcom provide smart water meters, network sensors and the supporting software required to manage connected utility networks. Together, the partnership will deliver an end-to-end solution designed to improve network visibility, efficiency and performance.
The technology enables earlier detection of leaks and faults, more accurate tracking of water consumption and improved planning of infrastructure investment. It also reduces the need for manual meter reading and supports faster responses to emerging network issues.
For households and businesses, access to more frequent usage data provides greater visibility of water consumption patterns, helping customers better understand their usage and identify opportunities to reduce waste and manage costs.
At a network level, smart metering supports more efficient operations and planning. Insights from connected devices and sensors can help utilities identify pressure irregularities, detect potential faults earlier and prioritise maintenance and upgrades where they are needed most.
Sagemcom’s technology includes the ability to integrate pressure and acoustic sensors within the water meters, allowing them to contribute to a broader uplift in network intelligence rather than acting solely as measurement devices. This enables utilities to monitor service performance in near real time and respond more proactively.
As Australia continues to face water security challenges, expanding the use of smart metering will play an important role in improving efficiency, reducing losses and supporting long-term planning.
Through this partnership, PLUS ES is advancing integrated metering and data solutions that support smarter, more connected infrastructure across essential services.
